Is Drone Racing, Racing Into Our Future Sports
Ayden Hall May 2, 2017
Maybe you have seen a drone/quadcopter flying across the sky capturing footage, but you may not know that there is a fast action racing sport centered around them. Drone racing is a competitive sport involving looking through live camera feed from the front of a small racing quadcopter and using only that to pilot it through rings around a course. This sport was recently added to ESPN.
Anyone can start drone racing if they have they have the money to pay for the drones and the gear. The thing is you can’t just buy any old drone and expect to have it be a racing drone. It has to be a specialized racing quadcopter that is stripped down to the bare minimum and have a specialized carbon fiber frame. They have high powered brushless motors, and they have cameras that have instant transmission to the headset receiver. This sport was made for fun, entertainment, and competition. It happens whenever a competition is held. Drone racing events can be held anywhere, but some of the bigger ones have been held in Las Vegas. You can get into drone racing and get some decent gear for around $300 if you want to get into it for a good price. It can get infinitely more expensive from that $300 price point. Some two famous drone racing pilots are Charpu and Skitzo. Drone racing started in Australia. It is one of the first e-sports.
A famous drone racing pilot that goes by the name Skitzo said, “I'm an FPV quadcopter pilot from Georgia. I used to skateboard for 15 years and transitioned to this wonderful hobby. I was mesmerized by the ability to explore our world from a different perspective!” His youtube channel is Skitzo FPV.
Overall, we may see drone racing in our future sports.
The Truth About Iowa
Maeci Williamson April 27, 2017
Iowa is known as a place where nearly everyone lives on a farm, yet it’s the complete opposite. Iowans are speaking up about the truth.
In a survey done on an average 6th grade class, only 3 out of 21 students lived on a farm. This data shows that people in Iowa don’t all live on farms. Des Moines, Iowa’s capital, is a large city bustling with people. There are many large buildings there. 209,220 people live in Des Moines. Des Moines is a perfect example of the city side of Iowa. While Iowa doesn’t have the largest cities, it does have some.
Drew Ridenour, a sixth grade student, said that “Iowa has big cities just like every other state. The big cities just aren’t quite as large as other cities, such as New York. Although Iowa has a lot of farms, there are also a lot of cities.” Drew thinks that everyone should understand that Iowa is not just farmland and small towns.
Skateboarders Need More Respect
Andrew Keith May, 2017
You are riding your skateboard over to Casey’s to buy a candy bar and all of a sudden a police officer pulled you over and gave you a ticket just because you were riding a skateboard.
Today many skateboarders are being treated badly by police because of their appearance. Since the 1980’s skateboarding has been looked upon badly by police and adults. Skateboarding is like this in many places ranging from the biggest cities to the smallest towns. Many Adults believe that just because you skateboard you do drugs or are going to do something bad.
A recent survey at the Bondurant-Farrar middle school shows that 1 in every 4 students say that skateboarders are bad people just by their appearance. In school we are taught to judge people by their personality, not their appearance which is what adults and the police force’s need to realize.
“If you respect us, then we will respect you back,” says Andy Schrock, A professional skateboarder in the Cincinnati area. In conclusion, if you respect skateboarders, skateboarders will respect you back.
